This one stares back at you. The face fills almost the whole frame — heavy brow, deep-set eyes under a horned helm, a braided blonde beard, blue war paint streaked across the bridge of the nose and out across the cheekbones in jagged shapes. Nothing about the composition is decorative; it's a confrontation.
The palette is narrow on purpose. Cool electric blue for the paint and helm shadows, warm browns and tans for the beard and skin, a few muted highlights of cream on the metal. Detail density is high in the hair and beard — expect to spend most of your time there. A good piece for colorists who like portrait realism with one expressive non-realistic element to play with.
