The paw is up, the eyes are wide, and the cat has just spotted itself in the ornament. A tabby in profile reaches toward a glass bauble hanging in the tree, and there — small and curved across the surface of the ball — is its own reflection looking back.
Behind the cat, dark blue tree shadows and soft bokeh lights blur the background out so the foreground reads sharp. The fur work is the meat of this one: warm browns, cream, black stripes, and a peach nose, all rendered in the kind of broken brushy shapes that ask for patience.
The reflection in the ornament is its own small puzzle inside the larger piece. A nice payoff for colorists who like a hidden detail to anchor the work around.
