Smiling Scarecrow in a Field
Adorable scarecrow with patchwork outfit and stitched smile among warm autumn scenery.
What does a scarecrow look like when it isn't trying to be scary?
Like this. A burlap-headed figure with two black button eyes, a triangle nose, and a stitched-up smile, arms flung wide as if mid-greeting. Straw spikes out of the cuffs and collar; a battered brown hat tips back on the head with bits of leaf and corn-husk caught in it.
The clothes do most of the color work — patched red sleeves, blue overalls with mustard buttons, a frayed skirt of mismatched fabric in red, blue, and ochre. The background is a soft autumn smear of olive and butterscotch. A friendly, harvest-festival kind of piece, well-suited to colorists who want fall colors without the gothic edge.
