Fast Color by Numbers in Procreate
A quick Procreate walkthrough for finishing a color by number in a fraction of the usual time — set the outline layer to multiply, use it as a reference, and color-drop straight through the design. Works with any color by number that ships with separate outline and numbered versions.

- 00:00 Want to do a color by number without spending a lot of time? I'll show you how.
- 00:03 You've probably seen people outlining shapes and color dropping. Sometimes you just don't have time for it.
- 00:10 So I'm going to show you step-by-step how to do it quickly using this design by Simply Creative Colors.
- 00:16 I deleted all of the folders that come with the download except the difficulty level I want to use.
- 00:20 I also deleted the PDF and SVG folders because we won't need them.
- 00:26 First, go into color reference, open the color grid, and save as image. We'll use this later.
- 00:31 Go back and go into the PNG folder. Open the gray number version in Procreate.
- 00:38 Then select the wrench and insert a file. This time, select the outline version.
- 00:46 Go back to the wrench and go into canvas. Turn on reference, image, and import the palette file we saved earlier.
- 00:55 In layers, the top layer is outline, and the layer below is numbered. I like to rename them so they're clear.
- 01:02 Add a new layer between these. This is the layer we'll actually be coloring on.
- 01:07 Double-tap the outline layer and set it to reference.
- 01:10 Now click the letter N on the right of the outline layer and set it to multiply.
- 01:15 With the layer on multiply, you can now see the numbers again. Open layers and make sure you're on the layer between outline and numbered. We're ready to start coloring.
- 01:23 In the reference image, find the color you want to use and hold down on it to choose it.
- 01:30 Because we have a reference layer above the layer we're on, we can just color drop and it will stay within the lines.
- 01:36 Keep picking color and dropping color to fill in the artwork.
- 01:40 This method lets you get color down quickly. You can always go back and smooth things out or do any clean up if necessary.
- 01:47 You may notice some locations where the lines don't perfectly overlap. You can correct that by adjusting the numbered layer, but I don't normally worry about it because it doesn't affect anything.
- 02:01 Keep color dropping until you have the entire canvas painted.
- 02:05 Just turn off your outline layer, and you just did a color by number in a fraction of the time.
- 02:11 This method only works for color by number that provide a numbered version and an outline-only version. See my bio to get hundreds of designs you can use to color this way.
