Sunset Vineyard with Rolling Hills

Rows of grapevines running straight at the horizon, a violet-and-coral Tuscan sky overhead, and the sun sitting low between two distant hills. The perspective is the whole composition — every line in the lower half of the piece pulls toward the vanishing point.

The palette skews unusually purple for a landscape. Lavender shadows on the hills, navy-leaning greens in the foliage, ochre highlights along the tops of the vine leaves where the sunset catches them, and a peach-to-magenta sky that does most of the emotional lifting. The two foreground vine posts wrapped in lavender twine are the colorist's chance to introduce a fourth temperature without breaking the mood.
